The music community and residents of Victoria’s High Country are mourning the tragic death of Talae Rodden, the musician known professionally as RICEWINE, following a fatal accident on Mount Buller Road. Rodden died at the scene after a tree fell onto the vehicle in which he was travelling.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Monday, August 10, 2026, at approximately 9:15 a.m. Talae was a passenger in a car being driven by his mother, Sally Rodden, when a tree fell onto the vehicle on Mount Buller Road in northeastern Victoria. Talae was killed in the crash, while his mother was taken to hospital with serious injuries. 

Talae Rodden was a talented singer-songwriter who built a growing music career under the name RICEWINE. His work combined elements of indie pop, hip-hop, lo-fi music, and what he described as “dreamhop.” His music project developed a following in Australia and internationally, with releases including Lovesick and In Valley. 

His passing has brought particular sadness to the Mount Buller, Merrijig, and Mansfield communities, where the Rodden family was deeply connected. The family has been described as much-loved members of the region, with connections to businesses and lodges in the Victorian High Country. 

Beyond his music, Talae will be remembered by those close to him as a son, brother, friend, and valued member of his community. He is survived by his mother Sally, father Cha, and brother Jared. 

Tributes have begun flowing for the young musician, with community members expressing shock and heartbreak over his sudden death. A fundraiser established through the University Ski Club is supporting the Rodden family with funeral expenses and medical costs associated with his mother’s recovery. 

The circumstances surrounding the fatal accident remain under investigation. Police are preparing a report for the coroner as authorities continue examining what happened.
