The communities of Highmore and Orient, South Dakota, are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Preston Reid Aesoph, a 16-year-old whose life was tragically cut short following a motor vehicle accident. His passing has left family, classmates, friends, and neighbors grieving a young man remembered for his laughter, energy, kindness, and love for those around him.
Preston died Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in Wessington following the vehicle accident. For his family and friends, the tragedy represents the loss of a beloved son, brother, cousin, and friend whose presence brought happiness to countless people.
Born August 17, 2009, Preston was deeply connected to his family and valued the time he spent with his parents, siblings, and cousins. He embraced farm life and enjoyed working cattle, repairing fences, riding four-wheelers, and helping with various projects. His strong work ethic also showed through the mowing jobs and other work he took on within the community.
Preston had many interests that reflected his adventurous personality. He loved fishing, jet skiing, boating, hunting, golf, wrestling, and football. He was also a devoted Green Bay Packers fan and Yankees supporter. During the summer, he attended three football camps, continuing to pursue activities he enjoyed.
At Highmore High School, Preston was recognized for his academic efforts through the Merit Honor Roll. He was also involved in FBLA and FFA, becoming an active part of his school community.
Those who knew Preston will remember his humor, spontaneity, kindness, and infectious smile. He had a way of bringing energy and laughter into everyday situations, creating memories that his family and friends will continue to cherish.
His death has brought profound sadness to Highmore, Orient, and surrounding communities. In the midst of grief, family members, classmates, and friends are coming together to remember the life Preston lived and the many experiences he shared with those around him.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for August 12 at the Hyde County Memorial Auditorium in Highmore. A memorial will also be established in Preston’s honor, providing an enduring way for his community to remember his life and legacy.
Preston’s life was far more than the circumstances of his passing. He was a young man who loved his family, enjoyed the outdoors, worked hard, participated in his school and community, and brought joy to the people around him.
Although his life ended far too soon, the memories Preston Reid Aesoph created will remain with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
