The Muncie-area community is mourning the tragic death of 18-year-old Matthew Morey, whose disappearance in the rain-swollen Mississinewa River near Albany, Indiana, led to a large-scale search involving multiple emergency agencies.

Matthew reportedly entered the river on Wednesday evening, August 12, along with three other people from an iron bridge on Gregory Road, northwest of Albany. Emergency crews were called at approximately 8:30 p.m. Three people were located and brought to safety, but Matthew remained missing.

A coordinated search operation followed, involving Delaware County sheriff’s deputies, Eaton and Albany police, firefighters, Indiana Department of Natural Resources personnel, and Indiana State Police. Crews used boats, drones, riverbank search teams and an Indiana State Police helicopter in an effort to locate him.

The search was temporarily suspended around 12:30 a.m. Thursday and resumed at approximately 8 a.m. However, dangerous conditions later forced authorities to halt the operation again around 2 p.m. Rising water levels, powerful currents and heavy debris created significant risks for rescuers.

Matthew’s disappearance brought deep concern to his family, friends, classmates and teammates. He was associated with the Muncie area and was a member of the Delta High School boys varsity basketball team, where he wore No. 20.

As the community waited for answers, those close to Matthew gathered to support one another and his family during an extraordinarily difficult time.

A candlelight vigil was scheduled for Friday, August 14, at Union Chapel in Muncie, giving family, friends, classmates, teammates and community members an opportunity to remember Matthew and stand beside his loved ones.

Matthew’s death has left a profound void among those who knew him. At only 18, he had his future ahead of him, and his sudden loss has brought heartbreak to everyone who had hoped to see him continue growing, pursuing his goals and making memories with the people he loved.

For his family and friends, memories of Matthew will now carry special significance. His presence on the basketball court, friendships, school experiences and everyday moments shared with those around him will remain part of the legacy he leaves behind.

The community continues to extend condolences to Matthew’s family, teammates, classmates and everyone affected by his passing. His life was far too short, but the memories he created will continue to be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
